Image description

V.S. Naipaul (born 1932) English novelist, short-story writer, travel writer and essayis, born in Trinidad. Regarded as one of the most powerful fiction-writers of his generation. His early novels are comedies of manners set in Trinidad. His first long novel, A House for Mr Biswas (1961), a family saga, describes the dissolution of a whole colonial way of life. His later work is more overtly political, pessimistic and violent, He has won numerous awards, among them the Booker Prize for In A Free State (1971) and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001. He was knighted in 1989.
