Beschreibung des Bildes: Teacher and president of the municipality of Unterbaech in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, Paul Zenhaeusern teaches a class in February 1957. He initiated the introduction of female suffrage in his municipality. On March 3, 1957, on the orders of the municipal council, the women of Unterbaech were allowed to vote for the first time. However, the municipality's ballot on the question of compulsory civil service for women was revoked by the government of the canton of Valais and the Federation. The majority of cantons implemented female suffrage on the municipal and cantonal basis in 1971.
