Camp de concentration Auschwitz

Empty cans are on display in the museum section of Auschwitz concentration camp in Oswiecim, Poland, 21 December 2014. The cans contained the poisonous gas Cyclon B which was initially developed in 1922 as a pesticide. However, in 1941 it was used in a test series to murder Soviet PoWs as a precurser to the industrialised killing of the gas chambers. Around 4 kilogrammes were need to murder around 1,000 people. Cyclon B was produced by a subsidary of Degussa, which belonged to Fa. Th. Goldschmidt and the IG-Farben chemical company in Dessau. Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945 and was turned into a memorial site and museum in 1947. The camp has been since 2007 a listed UNESCO heritage site, official titled as 'Auschwitz-Birkenau - German national socialist concentration and extermination camp'.
