Adoration of the Magi, the Nativity, Rest on the Flight into Egypt (Aanbidding van de koningen, de Geboortekerk, Rust op de vlucht naar Egypte), by Jan de Beer, 1515-1520, 16th Century, oil on wood of walnut, 156 x 123 cm
Detail. Central panel of a tryptich representing the Nativity - on the right - and the Rest during the Flight into Egypt - on the left -, represented according to the traditional structure: various figures come to adore Child Jesus who sits on the knees of the Madonna, with the ox and the little donkey behind; among them the Magi - Melchior and Gaspar on their knees with gifts, Balthazar standing up on the left -; angels flying over the crowd; the style is extremely precious and rich of details, with bright, glazed colours, a skilful use of lights and shadows, the richness of specifics: persons described in minute details, gold, brocade, engraved marble, Italian style architecture and landscapes on the background.
