Description
William Faithorne the elder (London c.1616 – London 1691). Oil painting on panel, Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) by William Faithorne the elder (London c.1616 – London 1691), 1690. A three-quarter-length portrait, facing, in black surcoat with gold braid worn over an embroidered dress and a large ruff and jewelled headdress; her right hand on a table, her left holding a jewelled necklace. She is wearing two pendant jewels of rubies and emeralds set in gold; the larger topped by eagle swoopong on ermine. Originally at Beaurepaire, Hants, home of the Brocas family.
