The Portuguese Major Sarmento Beiras crosses the Atlantic during the night of March 17-18, 1927 with a Dornier 'Whale' seaplane with no stopovers. He left the west African coast and arrived on the island of Fernando Noronha off of the coast of South America. The auxiliary sail was installed in case of an emergency water landing.
