Guerre des Boers (Afrique du Sud, 1899-1902): The English Drummer Boy's Letter, Colesberg, South Africa', 1900. A British soldier writing home to his mother after the British captured Colesberg on February 28th 1900. One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a professional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques. The area around Colesberg in the northern Cape Colony saw fierce fighting in early 1900. The Boers withdrew across the Orange River after the end of their siege of Kimberley. Using guerrilla tactics, they continued to harrass the British in the area until the end of the war. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
