On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "(Mid-Winter) There are, to me anyhow, three features with outstanding interest in the New Bond St route. They are (1) Cain's, no 4, with the ancient shop window; (2) The old Grammar School & (3) the sketchy bit between New Bond St and Seneschal Lane, with Cain' cut-away wall. The last items in this section relate to the foregoing. Here is Cain's shop, which, a few days later, with the adjoining houses, was ripped down by a traction engine and a wire hawser. Apart from the two small houses on R, 6 & 6a, and the W gable of the King Orry Inn left standing to prevent their collapse, all the background is ruin and desolation. Cain's old window seems, curiously, to strike a mournful note."
