The landing was squeezed between Fenwick's Wharf and Wylam Wharf. The ferry was known as Sunderland Ferry or the High Ferry. It linked Sunderland and Monkwearmouth and was first operated with rowing boats and then with steam vessels. The last ferry remained in service until 1957. the narrow street beyond the steps is Bodlewell Lane, which led to Low Street.
