Image description

Anicia in ceremonial pose distributing alms; flanked by personifications of Magnanimity and Prudence. Pedanius Dioscorides (40-90 AD), Greek physician who compiled an extensive list of medicinal herbs which remained the authority in medicinal plants for over 1500 years. The oldest known manuscript of his work is the Juliana Anicia Codex housed in Vienna: Codex Vobonensis Medicus Graecus 1, better known as the Vienna Dioscorides. The princess sponsored the Codex Vienna Dioscorides or Dioscurides in 512, and hers is the oldest donor picture known to exist. Illuminated manuscript of De Materia Medica by Dioscorides in Greek. A dedication to Juliana Anikias in the Vienna Dioscorides (fol sixth verso). The enthroned princess is flanked by allegorical figures of generosity and wisdom.
