Image description

Creator: Williamson, Harold Sandys (1892-1978) A London street scene showing a large crater exposing underground pipes and wiring after a bombing raid, 1941. The crater has been cordoned off, with two soldiers working inside, and ARP (Air Raid Precautions) wardens standing to the side. The streets behind are busy with pedestrians, and lined with red-bricked buildings and a church. Harold Sandys Williamson was a British official war artist whose active service in the First World War produced A German Attack On A Wet Morning to much acclaim, and was shown at the Royal Academy. In the inter-war years he produced posters for the London Underground and London Transport, and was Head of Chelsea School of Art from 1930 to 1938.
