Image description

Creator: Williamson, Harold Sandys (1892-1978) An exterior scene, on the left of the composition, shows two ARP (Air Raid Precautions) wardens standing by the ruins of destroyed buildings, London, 1941. On the right is a scene of the interior of a public telephone office, with rows of booths in the centre, and people seated at temporary booths in the foreground. Harold Sandys Williamson was a British official war artist whose active service in the First World War produced A German Attack On A Wet Morning to much acclaim, and was shown at the Royal Academy. In the inter-war years he produced posters for the London Underground and London Transport, and was Head of Chelsea School of Art from 1930 to 1938.
