Image description

after Benjamin West PRA (Swarthmore 1738 - London 1820). Oil painting on canvas, The Death of Frederick, 1st Duke of Schomberg, at the Battle of the Boyne, after Benjamin West PRA (Swarthmore 1738 - London 1820), 19th century. A painting of William III at the Battle of the Boyne on 1 July 1690, with the death of the Duke of Schomberg, after the original painting by Benjamin West in the collection of the Duke of Westminster. William III is shown near the centre of the composition, wearing a red coat and seated on a white horse, in profile to the right. Behind him, to the left, are Prince George of Denmark and the Duke of Ormond. To the right, the dying Duke of Schomberg is being carried away from the battle field. In the middle distance, a figure has fallen from his horse, and has been identified as the Reverend George Walker, the Protestant rector of Donaghmore, who had fought against James II and was also killed at the Battle of the Boyne.
