An assembly of figures, some in Eastern dress, gather in a clearing in a wood to hear St John preach. He is standing on a mound in the middle centregound slightly to the left addressing his audience who are mostly on the right. A figure in a an exotic red cloak sits in the immediate foreground parallel to St John and a figure, seen from behind, stands next to him drawing the spectator into the scene.
