The Viceroy of India, Field Marshal Wavell, inspecting a detachment of 4th Battalion, 9th Gurkha Rifles, 1943 circa. Photograph, World War Two, far East, 1943 circa. The 4th Battalion was raised in 1940 and took part in the Second Chindit expedition in 1944 as part of 111th Brigade. The expedition was aimed at disrupting Japanese communications behind their front lines and preparing the way for the main Allied forces to recapture north Burma.
