Clifton Tomson was born in Nottingham where he lived for the rest of his life with his wife Grace Brailsford and their nine children. His father was recorded both as a ‘frame smith’ and a ‘gentleman’. He was a successful animal painter also adept, as seen here, at landscape backgrounds. He travelled extensively in England and many of his pictures feature, Doncaster, Nottingham or York racecourses. He died at the age of 53 and is buried where he was baptised in St Mary’s, Nottingham.
