Image description

Attributed to Hans Wuest of Frieburg, Switzerland (fl.1540). The use of crossbows dates back to ancient China. By the Middle Ages, they had become a powerful weapon in Europe. Lighter crossbows could be spanned, or armed, by hand, while the heavier steel types required assistance in the form of a hand winder such as this one which, when placed atop the stock of the weapon and engaging the bowstring, mechanically drew it back by rotating the handle.
