Portrait of Francis Messerli (1888-1975), taken in Lausanne in February 1953. As a promoter of sport and the Olympic movement, he participated in the founding of the Swiss Olympic Committee in 1912 and acted as its secretary in 1937. Between 1920 and 1936 he was Head of Mission at several Olympic Games. In 1937, Messerli was the director of the Olympic Institute in Lausanne and the International Office for Sports Education. He worked as executor of Pierre de Coubertin's will and in 1946 as historiographer of the International Olympic Committee
