Swiss theologian Karl Barth from Basel is one of the most influential Protestant theologians of the 20th century. From 1921 until 1935, Barth was professor of theology at three different German universities (Goettingen, Muenster and Bonn). After the National Socialists forced him to leave Germany, Barth was appointed to the chair of systematic theology at the university of his native town Basel and stayed there from 1935 until his retirement in 1962.
