A three-quarter length portrait of Richard Hoare of Ellisfield, eldest son of Sir Richard Hoare, Kt (STO/P/114) and ancestor of the Hoares of Ellisfield near Basingstoke. He owned Stourhead from 1714 to 1720, when it was sold to his younger brother Henry. He faces to the left, wearing a brown coat and carrying a hat under his left arm and a white glove on his left hand. His ungloved right hand is resting on a table on which are books and a sheet of paper covered with figures to which he is pointing. Stourhead, Wiltshire (Accredited Museum)
