Giuseppe Antonio BORGESE (12 November 1882 - 4 December 1952) Italian writer, he taught German literature in the universities of Turin (1909-10) and Rome (1910-17), then in the Scientific-Literary Academy of Milan (1917-1925) where, from 1926, he moved to the university's chair of aesthetics. Contrary to the fascist regime, in 1931 he left Italy for the United States, of which he later acquired citizenship and where he taught (1936-48) Italian literature at the University of Chicago. In 1949 he was returned to Milan. In addition to his fervent activity in literary criticism, he also expressed himself as a narrator, among his novels and short stories: Rubè (1921); The living and the dead (1923); Le belle (1927); Tempesta nel nulla (1931) and as a poet he published a single volume Poesie (1922) and as a playwright two tragedies: L'arciduca (1925) and Lazzaro (1926); numerous other his writings, articles, essays that also appeared posthumously.
