Spring Cleaning (oil on canvas)

Also titled The Removal; The physical exertion of moving furniture for spring cleaning is captured in Roland Pitchforth's picture. The heavy, rounded limbs of the figures reflect the popularity of a sculptural style in British painting in the 1920s and 1930s. They almost seem to be taking part in a kind of dance, like a modern version of pictures of dances in ancient myths. This picture was painted whilst (Roland) Vivian Pitchforth was a member of the London Artists' Association from 1928 to 1932.
