Wise Collection 2: Scenes at street festival and rally in Calcutta (Kolkata)

The footage shows scenes at a festival of some kind. A large group of people (Muslims) pray, enjoy themselves at a street festival, and then crowds gather for a political rally, at which Gandhi speaks. (00.00 to 01.18) A large number of men and boys gather in the streets. They march in a demonstration with banners, some with Arabic text, and flags. Some of the boys appear to beat themselves on the back with straps whilst dancing in a circle, surrounded by a group of men. Other men and boys also dance/march on the spot. (01.19 to 01.50) A boy washes a ram, which is then seen hanging from a tree being butchered. The footage then returns to a street scene, where a large number of Muslim men engage in prayer. (01.51 to 02.23) The footage is of a very large number of Muslim men gathered in a park/field. They all engage in prayer. (b/w) (02.24 to 04.55) Footage of a street festival. Large numbers of Muslim men walk through the streets, stands flying flags release balloons, and trucks decorated with flags carry men with megaphones. In the streets men, women and boys beg, with many appearing sick or injured. Other men sell fruit, street food and crush sugarcane. Children play in a playground and ride fairground rides. A European woman walks through the scene. (04.56 to 05.16) A large number of vultures gather to eat food scraps in the middle of a busy street whilst traffic, including several busy buses with passengers on the outside, pass by. (05.17 to 05.59) More footage of men begging or laying in the street, as well as men performing tricks to entertain passers-by. (b/w) (06.00 to 07.33) A European man is surrounded by a group of Indian children, who all wave to the camera. A group of men on a podium make speeches to a large crowd whilst Indian and Pakistani flags fly. (07.34 to 08.08) A large group of men bathe in the river and gather on the shoreline underneath a large iron/steel girder bridge with temples in the background. (b/w) (08.09 to 08.23) Footage of a sunset. (08.24 to 08.59) A statue with offerings, burning incense and flowers has an Indian flag draped over it.
