In the foreground on the right shows the then still-standing statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps, blown up and removed in December 1956 by Egyptian resistance. Pamela Drew had been a poster artist for Shell's Visit Britain campaign in 1936, and exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. During the Second World War, she joined the Women's Royal Naval Service for the RAF Coastal Command in Plymouth.
