Image description

Artist: The Mortlake Tapestry Manufactory; After: Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506) Trophy bearers riding elephants followed by men carrying vessels and military trophies, a column in the background with the equestrian statue of an Emperor, either Trajan or Antoninus, shield to right-hand outer slip. From a set of three Charles II Mortlake tapestries depicting the Triumph of Julius Caesar with added borders of trophies of armour, helmets, breastplates, pikes, maces, etc. with double-eagles in the angles and the middle of the top borders, each panel bearing the Mortlake shield mark, each reduced at the bottom above the borders. After designs by Mantegna, from the cartoons at Hampton Court, this set was probably produced in 1670. Woven at Mortlake for Ralph, Duke of Montagu for Montagu House, Bloomsbury.
