Image description

Artist's impression of KELT-9b orbiting its star KELT-9, located 650 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. Kelt-9b is an exoplanet about 2.8 times the size of Jupiter with a surface temperature exceeding 4,300°C on its face exposed to its star, barely 1,000°C lower than our Sun. It's the hottest gas giant planet ever discovered. The planet is so heated and violently bombarded with ultraviolet that its atmosphere evaporates inexorably. This hot Jupiter was discovered using a system of two robotic telescopes, the KELT or Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescopes, located in Arizona.
