Image description: Webley .455 inch Mk VI service revolver, 1st (or Kings) Dragoon Guards, 1916 (c). The Webley was the standard pistol used by British and Commonwealth officers from the 1880s until the 1960s. The 1st (or Kings) Dragoon Guards were serving in India in 1914 when World War One broke out. The unit transferred to France in November 1914 and saw service on the Western Front until 1917 when it returned to India. Pistols and revolvers were used in hand-to-hand fighting and for personal protection but could also be used to shoot wounded or dying horses, in order to end an animals suffering.
