Image description

House wrecked at Antwerp by Zeppelin raid, 1914. Lantern slide, World War One, Air Operations (1914-1918), 1914. The German Zeppelin LZ 25 bombed Antwerp on the night of 25-26 August 1914, killing and wounding 26 people. The Antwerp garrison, well-ensconced behind formidable defences, was a danger to the flank of the German invasion force as it advanced through Belgium and into France. After resisting several sorties from the city, the Germans finally launched an all-out attack on Antwerp in September. After a month-long siege the city fell on 9 October. From a box of 70 lantern slides associated with the attack on Belgium, 1914.
