‘Ten horses for working howitzers’, 1916 circa. Photograph, World War One, Western Front, 1916 circa Howitzers fired heavy calibre shells on a high trajectory through a relatively short barrel and were thus the best type of artillery to employ against trenches and fortifications. These weapons were used by units of the Royal Garrison Artillery.
