Second Lieuteant A.J. Hadden, Subedar Raja Ram and an unknown Indian soldier with ‘Jack’ the dog, Lakki, December 1915. Photograph, India, 1915. A British and an Indian officer of the 10th Jats pose with a pet dog, possibly a regimental mascot, in India. Until the 1920s, all British officers were senior to their Indian counterparts, but Indian officers who were promoted from the ranks of the regiment always formed a vital link between the soldiers and their British commanders. Subedar Raja (or Raje) Ram joined the regiment in 1898 and became a jemadar in 1906. During the First World War he was a subedar, and he was awarded the Order of British India, 1st Class, in 1921.
