Image description

Second Lieuteant A.J. Hadden, Subedar Raja Ram and an unknown Indian soldier with ‘Jack’ the dog, Lakki, December 1915. Photograph, India, 1915. A British and an Indian officer of the 10th Jats pose with a pet dog, possibly a regimental mascot, in India. Until the 1920s, all British officers were senior to their Indian counterparts, but Indian officers who were promoted from the ranks of the regiment always formed a vital link between the soldiers and their British commanders. Subedar Raja (or Raje) Ram joined the regiment in 1898 and became a jemadar in 1906. During the First World War he was a subedar, and he was awarded the Order of British India, 1st Class, in 1921. Second Lieutenant A.J. Hadden joined the regiment from the Indian Army Reserve of Officers during the First World War. From album of 146 photographs compiled by Captain T M Layng, 1915-1921.
