Carnival parade of children of the Pioneer movement in the USSR. The children are carrying a banner, declaring they present their gift to the Communist Party for the Pioneer two-year plan, a Pioneer girl in a giant corncob costume. This shows how they get ready through fun and games to one day take their place in Soviet society. The Pioneer emblem is a flaming red star with the motto “Always ready”. The Pioneer movement was founded in the 1920s in the Soviet Union. The name comes from the idea that children should be thought to be the first in everything they pursue. There was such movement in all communist countries. Membership of the movement was available to children from the first year of school up to 13-14 years of age. Only children of 'enemies of the people' would have been excluded.
