May 05, 1953 - British Canberra jet bomber sets up new World Altitude record of over Twelve miles.: It has been officially announced that the British Canberra Jet Bomber, powered by two Bristol Olympus Turbo Jet engines and piloted by Wing Commander W.F. Gibe ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ on may 8th set up a new world altitude record for Class C aeroplanes. Observes by officials of the Royal Aero Club and the Federation Aernonautique Internationals the Olympus Canberra took off from Filton aerodome at 14.32 hrs. and landed again at 15.33 hrs. after creating a new record of over 12 miles in height
