Apr. 04, 1953 -” Emato, The Market Woman” Native Statue For Western Nigerian City: benin City Native, Western Nigeria, at the suggestion of the OBA OF BENIN, has commissioned a statue of Emato, a Beni market woman of the 15th. century, revered by the Benin people for her humanitarian work and love of children. It sis to be erected over her grave near the mar ~ et place in Benin. The sculptor is Mr. John Danford, who is the British Council's Regional Director in the Western Province of Nigeria. He is working on the statue which is 6 ft. tall - in A Chelsea studio. It is to be cast in bronze.
