Image description

Mexico City. Dig deep into the ground at Mexico City in South America and you could unearth a rare treasure from an ancient civilisation. This is possible because the city stand on the site of a 15th century town called Tenochitlan. It was built by the Aztecs, an American-Indian tribe who lived in the Valley of Mexico at the time of the Spanish conquest from 1519-21. Original artwork for illustration on pp24-25 of Look and Learn issue no 550 (29 July 1972).
