Image description

Ancient Rome. The ship bearing the statue of Aesculapius, Greek god of healing, was being rowed up the Tiber when a snake - his emblem - was seen swimming towards Tiberine Island. The top inset shows the Tiberine Island, whose walls were shaped like Aesculapius' ship. The portrait is of Pyrrus, who tried and failed to conquer Rome. Original artwork for Look and Learn issue no 1008 (4 July 1981).
