Holland and Belgium in the Second World War

Image description: Holland and Belgium in the Second World War. 14 May 1940. This was the last day in Holland's five-day war. Two German squadrons flew back and forth over Rotterdam. At the end of the day, two square miles of the city centre had become a vast heap of rubble. Holland surrendered. Though the Belgian army (below) resisted the invaders with gallantry, the German pressure was too powerful for them to withstand. The Belgians were compelled to give ground, and war-weary artillerymen had to suffer the humiliation of defeat. Original artwork for illustration on p21 of Look and Learn issue no 650 (29 June 1974).
