Image description

Height of the Malayan Emergency; Gurney killed by members of the Malayan Communist Party. Riding in his Rolls Royce Silver Wraith with his wife and private secretary, D J Staples. Ambush in the jungle. Communist terrorists stationed in the thick forest northeast of Selangor in Malaysia have opened fire on the car of British high commissioner Sir Henry Gurney. To prevent his wife sitting by his side from being hit, the Gurney, having his car stopped, descended so as to draw fire on himself; and he fell fatally wounded. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 21 October 1951.
