Image description

Augusta Frances East, wife of Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare, 5th Bt (1824-1894) was a friend of the artist. He painted her in 1858 whilst in Paris when he was only 28. It is a sombre portrait. She is standing in a garden next to an orange tree, wearing all black, possibly in mourning, except for the red roses in her hair. Her husband’s uncle had died the year before leaving him as the successor to the baronetcy.
