High Level Bridge from Gateshead

The planks littering the yard on the Gateshead bank at the front of the picture are probably for ship repair. The unfinished picture shows Muncaster's technique of carefully outlining the scene in permanent ink before adding light washes of colour. Muncaster worked as a sailor as a young man, and his 1926 visit to Newcastle and Gateshead may have been the result of his ship coming into port. He was based in the south of England.
