Image description: Dawson, Byron Eric drawing, watercolour and pencil on paper, entitled Gateshead Grammar School, by the artist Byron Eric Dawson Gateshead Grammar School was built as a private boys' school in 1883 on Durham Road. Gateshead School Board took it over in 1894, when the school began taking girls as well. It was given the title of Grammar School after 1945, and was rebuilt in 1963. The Shipley Art Gallery (built 1914-17) is in the background of this view. This scene is one of a large number of watercolour views of buildings and streets in Newcastle and Gateshead painted by Byron Dawson.
