Having lived at Whickham thoughout the 'fifties, this view was familiar to us. The painting was presented to me on retiring from the chair at the end of the first five years of the Tyne and Wear Foundation. It is by a member of the Norfolk Street Project in Sunderland, which helped people (including many former residents of Cherry Knowles Hospital) develop through artistic activity. The project has been supported by the Foundation, which is the leading community foundation in the UK, and this item may stand for wider involvement in charitable grant-making and voluntary activity in the region.
