Image description

after Hans Holbein the younger (Augsburg 1497/8 - London 1543). Oil painting on panel, William Warham (1450?-1532), Archbishop of Canterbury, after Hans Holbein the younger (Augsburg 1497/8 - London 1543), thought to be 17th century. Inscribed: IMAGO WILHELMI WARHAM CANTVARIENSIS ARCHIEPISCOPVS. A bust-length portrait with identifying inscription of William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury, in surplice, red cassock and black cap in a feigned oval. William Warham (1503 -1532) was one of the last Catholic Archbishops of Canterbury under King Henry VIII, who was pressured by the King into advising Pope Clement VII to annul the latter's first marriage to Katherine of Aragon. He was also a friend of Sir Thomas More. His portrait was acquired by Charles Winn in 1849, when the picture dealer and restorer, Edwin Holder advised him that it was `...very curious and good, probably by Holbein'.
