The young Christ stands at a canopied lectern teaching from an open book and gesticulating with his open right hand towards an old man who stands before him on the steps. A group of elders stand behind them in the shadows. Two more scholars, one sitting on the steps, with closed book on his lap and another book at his feet, in the centre foreground, and another sits perched beside Christ, looking towards him, with an open book on his lap, on the right.
