A three-quarter-length portrait, standing beside a horse. He wears a yellow jacket trimmed with silver and lined in blue. He holds the horse's rope in his right hand. The horse's chestnut head is to the right, a white blaze on its muzzle. Landscape background. The mother of Charles, 4th Viscount Cullen (1687-1716), Catherine Willoughby was the sister-in-law of Sir John Harper, 3rd Bt. As it was unusual for the noblemen to be painted in their own liveries, the subject of this portrait shown holding the horse on a lunging cavesson may be a groom.
