British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas (oval),Sir William Yonge, 4th Bt (1693- 1755) of Escot, Devon. An oval framed half-length portrait of a young man in a blue coat and white stock, looking to right, with his left hand on his waist. Sir William Yonge of Escot Devon was the son of Sir William Yonge of Colyton, Devon. William Yonge was elected MP for Honiton in 1722 and succeeded his father as 4th Baronet in 1731. Active in government he rose to Vice-Treasurer of Ireland in 1746. He was 17 years old when depicted in this portrait. It is believed to be an original Parminter item that belonged to the grandfather of Mary Parminter who is known to have recieved other gifts (porcelain) from the Yonge family. Inscription verso black ink on canvas "Sir W. Yonge" also a partially obscured label on frame verso "Sir William Yonge, father of Sir George Yonge that faimily intermarried....."
