Lady Elizabeth Scot Lindsay, Countess of Hardwicke (1763-1858)

Oil painting on canvas, Lady Elizabeth Scot Lindsay, Countess of Hardwicke (1763-1858) by George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness 1734 – Kendal 1802), 1782. A half-length portrait of a young woman, seated left arm resting on a pedestal, white head-dress, white sleeves. The youngest daughter of James Lindsay, 5th Earl of Balcarres and Anne Dalrymple married the future 3rd Earl of Hardwicke in 1782, just before which a single sitting with Romney is recorded. A black dress was subsequently painted on, probably after the Countess had lost both her sons - Philip (b.1784) in 1808, and Charles James (b.1797) in 1810. Mrs Bambridge had the over-painting removed when she bought the picture. Wimpole, Cambridgeshire (Accredited Museum)
