Miss Weston, Mrs Tooke

John Riley (London 1646 – London 1691). Oil painting on canvas, possibly Jane Yard (nee Weston) the wife of Robert Yarde, the sister of Lady Anne Vernon, aunt of Catherine, George Vernon's third wife. George paid 'Mr Royley' (John Riley) for her portrait in 1682. Three-quarter-length portait of a young woman, seated, turned slightly to the right, head turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, her left hand holding a fold of her cloak and her right hand gesturing to the right, she has dark brown hair and a ringlet has fallen on her right shoulder, she is wearing a pale brown dress over a white chemise and a red cloak fastened to her right shoulder and falling down across her lap, on the left is a brown silk drape falling to the left and behind her on the right is a spiral column behind which is a distant horizon with a sky. Jane Weston married Robert Yard in October 1681 and they had one child, Robert, b.1687. Other possibilities for this portrait include another of Lady Anne Vernon's sisters, Elizabeth Weston who married barrister, Charles Tooke. Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire
