An Officer

Italian (Neapolitan) School. Oil painting on canvas. An Officer, by an artist from the Italian (Neapolitan) School, 17th century.Three-quarter-length portrait, turned to left, head facing, in brown doublet with a red sash, grey satin sleeves, and ruff, his gloves in his right hand, his left resting on the back of a chair. With coat-of-arms (argent, three trefoils vert(?), in chief sable three stars or) in top right-hand corner*. A piece of twill canvas with the letters LCCR is attached to the back of the new stretcher (presumably part of original canvas). *The only arms in Rietsap with the same configuration - but not apparently the same tinctures - are those of Rogier, or Rogiers, of Tournai: D'argent, à trois trèfles de sinople; au chef d'azur, changé de trois étoiles (8) d'or. [a letter to the archivist in Tournai produced no response]. Inscribed in red [in a 19th-century hand?] bottom left: [?ristaurato] da MB [MB in ligature]. Tatton Park, Cheshire (Accredited Museum)
