Image description

after George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness 1734 – Kendal 1802). Oill painting on canvas, The Beaumont Family, after George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness 1734 – Kendal 1802). Copy after an original of 1777/9, altered in 1783, now in Tate Britain, purchased in 1919. The sitters are looking at a portrait of their dead brother, Charles Beaumont. Richard Henry is in the middle. Captain George Barnard is next to his wife, Elizabeth Beaumont. He was in the Enniskillin Dragoons. To the left are Thomas and John Beaumont. Thomas William Beaumont (1751-1782) ‘ sometime Lieutenant 4th dragoons’. Thomas died shortly after Romney originally completed the picture and may have been put into army dress posthumously.Richard Henry Beaumont (1748-1810), who owned Whitley Beaumont when the picture was painted. John Beaumont (1752-1820), in the green coat leaning on the back of the chair, he took over Whitley Beaumont after Richard Henry’s death. Elizabeth Barnard (1753-1814) their sister, seated, pointing to a portrait of most probably – Charles Beaumont (1750-1774), their brother, who died 3 years before the sittings began. It is possible however that the unfinished portrait might be of Richard Henry Beaumont then head of the family (standing 2nd from the left).George Barnard (d. 1820), married Elizabeth Beaumont 1774 standing behind the table supporting the picture. He became Lt-Colonel of 86th foot in 1783 and it is possible that the group picture was altered then by Romney to show his new rank. Ormesby Hall, Redcar and Cleveland (Accredited Museum)
