Sir Humphrey May (1573-1630)

British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, Sir Humphrey May (1573-1630), British (English) School. Three-quarter-length portrait, standing beside red-draped table, with red draped curtain, right background, and balustrade on left. He has short dark hair, moustaches and suggestion of a clipped beard. He wears a dark doublet and hose, with a deep white collar and cuffs with heavy lace embroidery. A sword hilt is visible on right side of picture. His right hand holds a large Key of Office on a turquoise-coloured ribbon. His left hand rests on a pair of gloves lying across a table corner. A soft hat with braid around the crown also lies on the table. 'Maternal Grandfather to John, Earl of Bristol'. Ickworth, Suffolk (Accredited Museum)
